Hacking is a term for maliciously breaking into computer systems to either steal information or cause damage.

There are many different types of hackers out there, but most fall into one of two categories: white hat and black hat. White hats, also known as ethical hackers, break into computer systems to try and find vulnerabilities that can be fixed proactively. Black hats break in looking to create damage or steal data for their own benefit. Although white hats and black hat hackers both exist, there are a few differences between them that help to describe the manner in which they go about their jobs.
White Hat Hackers: White hat hackers are individuals who work for companies and organizations who want to find vulnerabilities in computer systems. They try to find security holes that can be fixed before hackers take advantage of the potential weaknesses they find. This is known as penetration testing, and is a critical part of keeping information safe from being stolen or brought down by malware.
Black Hat Hackers: Black hat hackers, also known as crackers, break into computer systems to steal data. They may work alone or with other hackers in the underground hacking community known as a crew. Often times they sell their stolen information for profit or use it themselves. They are also responsible for the creation of several different types of malware (viruses and Trojan horses).
How Does One Become a Hacker?
There are a number of ways that one can learn how to hack. There are hacking courses offered professionally that teach basic information on how to hack. Many people who go this route are looking to make a career out of it and learn more than just the basics. Others teach themselves how to hack using information published online for free, which can be a dangerous endeavor because they do not have the proper training.
Black hat hackers are often found early in life through hacking groups, hacking competitions, or other forms of computer-related clubs. Some black hat hackers even come from well-respected white-hat hacker organizations and either find their way into the dark side or are pushed there by their employers.
