You may not be a programmer, but you depend on them every day.
How often have you heard these phrases?
"I need to show this draft to the programmers for their feedback."
"Who's got the login info for the server?"
"I'm about to start coding — does anyone want anything?"
If you're reading this post then chances are that one of these statements has come up in conversation at some point. While it's easy enough to understand what programming is in theory (anyone can look at a code sample) what programmers actually do all day is a little less clear. To try and explain it I decided to put together a list of the things that programmers do and an explanation about how they do them.

The list here is not meant to be exhaustive, but it should give you a good basic understanding of what's involved in being a programmer, especially if you're working with one for the first time. If you work in programming you'll probably find it easier to understand, although I would stress that even if this piece does help you, then reading other articles on this topic will still be helpful. It's also worth noting that how programmers actually spend their time can vary wildly depending on their job description.
