A year ago, I didn't know how to code. In that year, I've taught myself the basics and even managed to build an email app. So, if you're like me and want to get started with coding but don't know where to start - this post is for you!

In this article we'll cover what programming languages are available for beginners and how much they cost; how much time it will take to learn the basics; what resources are available for beginners who want a head-start; as well as apps that can be used as a complete course in programming.
You are the developer, not the customer
Before you start reading this article, I want to make it clear that you should stop thinking of yourself as a customer. You are the developer and you need to learn how to code - not whether your idea for a website works or not.
In addition, this article in no way contains affiliate links or sponsored content. If your interest is piqued by an app mentioned here, my only intention is that you take a look at it and make up your own mind about whether it's something worth buying. I'm not part of any marketing team here. I've only included apps because they seem useful for beginners.
The post will be constructed as follows:
First, we'll look at a number of free coding apps that beginners can use to pick up some basic concepts and ideas. Then, we'll take a look at more serious online courses such as CodeAcademy and Treehouse. Finally, we'll discuss where to go once you've learned the basics of programming and how to become a developer.
Free coding apps for beginners
Once you've decided that programming is something you want to do, it's time to start coding! But where to start? One great way is by doing some exercises on apps that will help you understand the basics.
It's important to realize that at this stage, you should not be trying to build an app from scratch - let alone build the next Twitter (even if you know exactly how to make it). If you're serious about learning to code, then the best way is to have a goal in mind.
For example, if you want to learn the basics of Javascript but aren't sure where to start or what concepts are important, Code School is a good place for beginners. It has some very good beginner apps which cover topics like 'JavaScript: Foundations', 'Functions and Closures' and 'Data Structures.
The courses are well-explained and clearly structured with a number of levels.
And you can do a lot of Projects while learning
